I'm behind Phantom, Boston, and Mandarins for some great stuff this year.

Phantom is sounding and looking VERY promising based on a few clips i've seen floating around.

So much farther ahead of where they were at this point last season (and it's still pre-season)

Did anyone else go to the show in theaters or see the show live?

I’m a bit miffed across the board. Wasn’t really blown away by anyone. Really enjoyed Bluecoats. Boston’s Guard was phenomenal, per usual. Kinda feel like Crowns show is “It is” part 2.  But I need to see it again.

Bluecoats show is great, it’s too bad they don’t march and play. But thats rewarded in DCI these days. Boston “not gonna miss my shot”... ugh going to get sick of hearing that a million times. Crown “it is” part 2?  Maybe but at least there is no singer. Cadets zzzzzzzzzzz. Blue Stars - enjoyed the show but again, goofy uniforms. Phantom show was underwhelming to me, especially after all the buildup.

Do have to say the audio wasn’t great in the theater, the volume needed to be turned up while the corps were playing. At least at the theater I was at. Seeing a corp in the theater compared to live... night and day. Crown at Lafayette sounded powerful and that just did not come across in the theater.  I’m sure all the top corps will sound amazing live!

Phantom- the props looked like something from a low budget elementary school drama production. All facets of program design are inadequate. The entire staff needs fired. They will not make finals.

Blue Stars- some ok moments from the brass and percussion but the design lacks clarity. The costumes were busy and hard to read from up top. 10th-11th place.

Cadets- a step backwards from last year. The brass is weak. Percussion is solid. Drill design looks high schoolish. Costuming made the horns look short and frumpy. The program itself is odd. 9th-10th place.

Boston- loud and aggressive for 95% of the program. Excellent guard. Program is over written and musically cluttered. They will not finish any higher than last year. 5th-6th place.

Carolina Crown- first group of the night to have all their ducks in row. Design elements make sense and are well thought out. Musical ensemble was crystal clear. Excellent brass and percussion. Mature drill. Guard will need cleaning. This can medal along with the 2 CA powerhouses.

Bluecoats- they know how to create a unique visual stage. The use of color and texture is stunning. Excellent performance quality from all sections. Unfortunately the music book is choppy and episodic and never really builds momentum and flow. There are some really fine musical moments but how they work within the overall structure of the production leaves me scratching my head.

In regards to making comments about drum corps performances this year and every year for that matter that are public. The performers can see what you post. Best thing you can do is be uplifting to the performers on public conversations. Whatever you say in private is your own deal, but publicly we should all support the performers.

So...you want us to lie about what we really think about a corp's performance?  Say positive things in public, even if we really don't believe it?

I for one am reviewing the shows as I saw them. And the designers of those shows. Not the kids marching them. I have no doubt the kids have all worked extremely hard for the past month. The kids have to sign up most of the time before they even know what the show is going to be, so they get zero say in it. All they can do is make the best of the design they are given.

Same is true for our high school bands. Each band’s kids work just as hard as the next.

But I watch a show and either love it, like, indifferent, dislike or hate it. Never once have I thought “if only this show had a different group of kids performing it!! Then it would be great!!”

Having watched a few corps rehearsals, they don’t baby the kids, so I don’t see why we should either. They are tough and can take it.

It would be interesting to hear how many KY kids are in the various corps this year.

To THAT group I say Bravo!! Continue to make KY proud! And best of luck all season!!

I know Dixie has like 3 members all marching Scouts this year! 💚

Am I the only one not all that impressed by any corps this year? Like most everyone’s fine right now but there’s no real standouts or anything all that exciting compared to past years, in my eyes.

Nope. I’m in the same boat with you.
