I just don’t see how a local show would be worth it. Seems like a lot of hassle for little to no reward.

Watching the KHSAA meeting. They’re moving towards not starting practices until August 24th. If we’re not allowing sports to have limited practices until the 24th, I don’t know how we can justify groups trying to have camps right now. Wonder if administrations will halt band activities.

Even though UIL is just “delaying” the season, many of the states groups are choosing to not participate in competitive fall marching band (including UIL competitions). Some of the state’s most well known programs such as Leander, Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, Rouse HS, Cedar Park, and Keller have come to this decision.

I agree. Both play extremely well. Just comes down to what you prefer. NH is very pretty/delicate whereas Lafayette brings the power. As a brass guy, I like a very powerful sound but I have counterparts that prefer a nice symphonic sound that NH brings. Neither is right or wrong. I think MC is more on the powerful brass side of things when it comes to their sound as well. I think the notion has been for the past several years that you have to have a sound like NH to be successful at at the national level. But Lafayette proved that to be wrong when they beat a GN finalist in Music and Music GE. This is also why I think MC will find success on the BOA level as well.

I’ve been saying for the past couple years that I think Jaggie’s bands sound better than Barton’s did. This is solely based on marching band. I haven’t heard MC’s concert band since Barton left.

I’d put Lafayette in the same league as NH on stage, but I won’t argue with giving NH the nod. I remember watching NH play Lincolnshire Posy and Lafayette play Festival Variations and thought they both sounded better than some college groups I’ve heard. There’s a gap between YPAS/NH/Lafayette and the rest of state when it comes to concert band (just look at the all-state numbers and you’ll see why)

Well duh about YPAS lol, I put them in a different category. I will respectfully disagree with you about Oldham County and MC. I’ve heard both and they’re both great. The two best KY groups I’ve heard outside of NH/Laf.

NH and Lafayette’s top concert ensembles are fantastic. I’ve seen both in-person. Both play some serious Grade-6 literature and both groups have 20+ All-State musicians. There’s not another program in the state that can match them on the concert side of things.

Honestly couldn’t wait for the debate to transition over to the HornRank boards for national people to see. 2020 has robbed us of that.

Welp 2020 is a wash. Was looking forward to the annual debates that always happen on here such as who would win a hypothetical showdown between NH and Lafayette and whether props enhance shows. I will miss the threads bashing voiceovers and making judgements about groups based on a video from their third day of band camp. I will also miss all of the new accounts popping up to fish for compliments. Fall won’t feel the same.

Also, word on the street is that BOA is cancelling all events Don’t quote me on it but that’s what’s going around on HornRank right now.

I think programs that are still attempting to have marching band have various motives for doing so. I think most are doing it to keep their programs visible and viable, as stated by theblowtorch. Some directors are fighting to show that their programs are essential and them fighting to have marching band is the most visible way to show decision makers that music education is important and should be treated as such. If there are directors that are moving forward with the idea that they’re actually going to compete and travel, it makes me wonder how in-touch with reality they are.

Back on topic, I have a buddy that works for a group that was planning to go to Macy’s. They’ve received several indicators that Macy’s will be a no-go this year. Talk about a bummer for those kids. I know they’ll be invited back for 2021, but still. Nothing official yet but it’s gotten to the point where the staff would be shocked if they went.

For the sake of this thread, can we not post articles from websites with obvious political leanings? Let’s not open that can of worms. Editted to add that I don’t care where you get your news from, that’s your prerogative. I just see this thread potentially getting messy about politics rather than what’s actually going on in the marching band world.

Per Facebook, Christian County will be non-competitive

    New KMEA Guidelines

If protocol is to pause all activity for 2 weeks for one positive test, I don’t see the risk/reward for trying to having a season. Instances like this are bound to happen.
  19. Brass33

    New KMEA Guidelines

Correct. You’re already seeing groups dropping out of regionals. Hence my skepticism of BOA moving forward with anything this fall.
  20. Brass33

    New KMEA Guidelines

Highly doubt groups will be allowed to travel out of state.

    New KMEA Guidelines

ISSMA will announce today that they are canceling. It is believed that this will be the final nail in the BOA coffin. There are groups dropping out of BOA regional lineups left and right. Call me Negative Nancy all you want, I’m just relaying what I’m hearing. Not a ton of positivity/optimism within the activity right now in terms on 2020.

    New KMEA Guidelines

Add another national group to the non-competitive list: Homestead HS (IN) Would not be shocked to see the other major Indiana programs announce the same after ISSMA officially cancels tomorrow. Edited to add Vandegrift HS (TX) is expected to announce going non competitive on Monday.

    New KMEA Guidelines

Don’t take my statement so literal. I agree nationwide competition is not the best idea right now. Interpret “wrong direction” as it doesn’t look good for having a season. When it comes down to it, BOA is in the business of making money. Not as many groups competing = not as much money to be made (if any).

Also heard BOA is trending in the wrong way as well
