  1. The KMEA Marching Band Committee held a meeting today to discuss their new guidelines for having a season due to Covid-19. Does anyone have any news on this? I know that there are three scenarios, but from my understanding we are currently facing scenario one, which includes 3 phases and schools returning to in-class school for the next school year. Just wondering what the guidelines for the season are.

This is good news. So far I've seen several bands already starting up. Keep up the social distancing and wear your masks, kids! Don't give them a reason to take your season away!

So essentially, KHSAA will continue this fall.

But...I do too...shhhh. Lol. Last year I saw a glimpse of the old GRC and I really liked it, and hope that they can continue with AJ Cook as well. I really hope those kids give him the opportunity to take them to greater heights. They've always had a really strong booster organization.

Because the Government doesn't work with Apple and Google already to obtain the GPS locations from our phones. They do.

You had to throw out 15 years didn't you? I feel ancient now. I really miss the Todd Moody GRC, and I'm hoping that AJ Cook can get them back to that level.

The way I look at it is concert band will be much more volatile. Enclosed space, closer distance between each student, etc. I would be more worried about school itself than marching band. Lol.

Pretty sure no forum member would say that, at least I hope they wouldn't.

I honestly have no idea. I thought I was seeing a glimmer of hope when they returned to finals in 2007, but they were 10th in 2008. Maybe that was just a luck of the draw sort of year. Either way, I think bad direction after bad direction hurt them. AJ Cook had done wonders taking them from 12th, to 6th, to 3rd in his 3 years there.

No, the mistake that Texas, Florida, and Arizona made was not taking action quicker and returning to normal too damn quick, but sure, we'll go with that.

I think what they meant was that back in the 90s and early 2000s the Cumberland County band program fielded a 3A size band, with around 80 kids. Now there is around 30 I believe. The program, as a whole, used to be one of the larger ones in the state.

Ah yes, because we are all experts on all things Covid-19 online. Lol. Fact of the matter is we are much more ahead of the rest of the United States. Boarders may be put on lockdown after the spikes this weekend, but regardless as long as high school football continues in the state so will marching band. Bands are taking every precaution possible per the requests of KHSAA, KMEA, and their local Board of Education. Water fountains are not to be used, 6 foot distances while not on the field and 3 foot distance while on the field, masks are to be worn off the field and in transport to and from competitions, student, staff, and volunteer temperatures are to be taken when they arrive, after lunch, and after supper and anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher is to be sent home immediately. Hand sanitizer is passed out regularly, and hand washing is mandatory. As everyone who is actually a professional in the healthcare field has been saying, wash our hands, wear masks, and we will be fine. So with that said, I will be stepping down off the soap box.

I understand that, I was just stating that some of the district heads voted against what the majority of their district wants/says on certain issues. Who could have seen that coming? Lol. There were more decisions going into Bourbon cancelling their season. I'm sure more on this issue will come to light at a later date, but I don't feel at privilege to say publicly at this time.

50% ticket money will be made...where? People who are going to show up are going to show up regardless of the format. You act like the western part of the state hasn't been doing one and dones successfully for decades.

This is the problem with the Board. They vote for themselves and not the state as a whole, as we saw just last year.

    New KMEA Guidelines

They aren't, and that's what I'm saying. Texas is much worse off than we are, so if UIL can do it then why can't we?

Why would a "one and done" season be a risk for any band hosting? Ticket money will still be made, which is where the majority of the money comes in to pay judges. Concessions will still be bought by fans, as long as concessions will be open, allowing for the bands to make their part of profit. Trophies are generally sponsored, because lord knows we've all sat through the explanation of each trophy sponsor at every competition since the beginning of time. Custodial is generally taken care of by the students or parent volunteers.

Why do you always have to be so damn rude to people? Every time you post it's always to be so snide. If you ask me, a director shouldn't conduct themselves in a public setting/forum like that, but what do I know, right? I was SO wrong about Harrison being a sure bet for state finals last year. *Sarcasm* Anyways, to answer your question, maybe due to current events competitions should move to a "one and done" system until the situation goes back to normal. That would make competitions feasible.

    New KMEA Guidelines

KMEA has been clearing the stands between regionals for years, so why not implement this between each class or each band? This keeps contact down to a minimum in the stands, fans will be able to properly socially distance, and schools who rely on competitions for funding will still make their buck. Also from my understanding, the challenge of bus transportation is being left up to each district for extra curricular activities, which marching band is. Most districts I've heard from are reporting that transportation will be close to normal, just limiting numbers on buses as to not hit the max number of 72 passengers and masks will be required. So really, the challenge for KMEA is fans in the stands, and I believe they will work that out. As I said before, if UIL can do it then there's no reason we can't.
