    Recruitment Ideas

A school system hierarchy is set up for lower levels to feed into the higher level of school. That part is pretty simple to understand. However, a middle school band's purpose is not necessarily meant to be nothing more than a feeder. It is to provide (in many school systems) an opportunity to introduce instrumental music to students in a group activity. From there, the student (or their parents) decide if it is best for the student to continue to the high school level. Calling a middle school band nothing but a feeder for the high school is an insult toward the middle school band program. In a lot of places, these two programs are separate--meaning the MS director isn't necessarily the assistant to the high school and vice versa. Daviess County is that way at last glance. However, with team teaching you do see some high school directors have time to go work with the middle school program and there is some collaboration between the two schools on curriculum. If a school system is blessed enough to have more than one director at a school, recruiting does become easier because you have a face to go along with the program. The purpose of this thread was to give ideas to a situation of where a band director is at their respective schools for the majority of the day, and NOT what the purpose of the middle school is and what we should call it. It helps immensely to have positive relationships with those people and with the rest of your colleagues (you never know when a student might be transferring in from another district). With all of that, the biggest thing is to be visual to the public. A director must be good at selling their program. You do that with public and private performances. Set up performances for every school that feeds into you--including the elementary schools. Do what you can to do some collaboration with the lower level students. Playing SSB at a football game is one way to get them involved. Being involved is the most likely way to get more students. How you do that is up to your imagination.

Random question.. What about the other activities available at your school? How are fall sports being fielded? It sounds like to me there is a lot of issues with your feeders with what they are able to do.

If I were you, I would take a look at what your feeders are doing. You do need to ask yourself a plethora of questions. What is your relationship with your feeder? How big are those programs? What is your retention rate? What is your overall goal for your program when it comes to size? 10% of the school population (which looks to be around 700) or more? Is your program marching or concert focused? I am sure many directors are dealing with what you are dealing with as well. Are you a member of any professional networks like the band director forum/guild on facebook? Many of those directors might have some great/horrible advice.

    The show must go on...

I understand you are not happy. Each location is different. I live in Nashville. The number of active cases is dropping by the day. However, most of the decisions were made during the worst times of this pandemic. If anything, it takes more hours to put together a show than it does field a football team or anything else. If you were putting on the same show every year, we would not be having this discussion. Football teams run basically the same types of plays. Unless you are going from spread option to more of a wing-based offense, there is no real change--just make sure you can have a great relationship between the qb and the skilled position players. You can do that with having basic 7-on-7 drills. Band is a completely different animal.

    Jobs OPEN in 2020//

It appears that Henderson County just came open the other day. Any word on Connor Kinmon?
  7. With as many bands that have called it a season, I am inclined to agree with you.

    Jobs OPEN in 2020//

I would hope so. The same thing ironically happened in the late 1990's. I think in 1997 they had about 180. In 1998, 112. This was right before JHHS was built. It takes almost no time with the wrong person to destroy years of progress.

    Give it time..
  10. As we all know this season is almost not going to happen. At this time (which is subject to change) there are only a few competitions to be had that haven't cancelled or done so publicly. It also appears that the band is marching on in many locations. This thread's intent is to showcase the exhibition shows that will be performed this fall. With that in mind, please share shows and videos of such.

    New KMEA Guidelines

As of 8-2-2020, Only only 16 contests have either decided to keep planning or not have an announcement for a contest. An update will be available tomorrow--8-4-2020.

I would honestly advise against it. The pool is shallow for one. Also, if you were to host a competition, money would be lost. Honestly, are there any bands still doing something competitive? Every circuit that would be a feasible option has already closed up for the season.

They kind of have to. Football is a revenue sport that brings in a ton of money to the schools (supposedly).

I would put North Hardin in the same category as Ben Davis. I am not certain they'd would make finals in class A. I'd say Lafayette would be bottom 5 as well. HOWEVER, would North Hardin be a Class A band in Indiana? I doubt it. North Hardin could possibly win Class B. In the past members of this board complained about 5A on a regular basis--discussing the fairness of it. All I can really say is go look at Class A in Indiana.

Definitely not a bad idea. How many opportunities do many students have to play in such ensembles? Such a great opportunity for these kids to learn more about their instruments.

As of right now, nothing has been said. Tennessee is still in phase 2 and the Murfreesboro area has been hit real hard with Covid.
